WHAT IS A PREPOSITION?
Preposition is a word or group of words (e g in, from, to, out, of, on behalf of) used before a noun or pronoun to show e g place, position, time or method (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary).
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PREPOSITION S:
- A part of speech in traditional grammar
- A structure word in modern grammar
- A small class of words
- No formal characteristics endings
- A word used to relate a noun or pronoun to some other part of the sentence
- Signal syntactic structures that functions as the other parts of the speech( noun, adjective, adverb)
- Range in meanings: from definite semantic notions as time, place, etc to purely structural meanings
- Signal that a noun or noun phrase or noun clause follows it
- A word that combines with a noun or pronoun to form a phrase
ENGLISH PREPOSITIONS LIST
There are about 150 prepositions in English. Yet this is a very small number when you think of the thousands of other words (noun, verb etc). Here is a short list of 70 of the more common one-word prepositions. Many of these prepositions have more than one meaning. Here is a list of prepositions:

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE: AT, IN, ON
In general, we use at for a point, in for an enclosed space, and on for a surface.
At( POINT ):at the corner, at the bus stop, at the door, at the entrance etc
In (ENCLOSED SPACE): in the garden, in London,in a box, in my wallet etc On (SURFACE) : on the wall, on the door, on the carpet etc
PREPOSITION OF TIME: AT, IN, ON
In telling the time, we use at for a precise time; in for months, years, centuries and long periods; and on for days and dates.
At ( PRECISE TIME): at 3 o'clock, at noon, at dinnertime, at the moment etc
In (MOUNTHS, YEARS, and LONG PERIODS) :in May, in 1990, in the next century etc
On (DAYS and DATES) : on tuesday, on Lebaran Day, on my birthday, etc
